While away on vacation |
- Make arrangements with the Post Office to hold your mail.
- Ask a neighbour to park one of their cars in your driveway.
- Have a friend or neighbour pick up junk mail and flyers.
- In winter, have a neighbour keep your walkway clean.
- Have lights on timers, inside your home.
- Have spotlights installed in the backyard, activated by motion detectors.
- Never leave an exterior light on continuously.
- Use a bar locking system on patio doors.
- Have a friend enter your house at least twice a week to check.
- Ensure that your alarm system is operating properly.
- De-activate your electric garage door opener.
- In winter, ensure that your heating system is working properly.
- Advise Public Security of your departure and arrival dates.
- Service heating system, ensure full tank of oil.

- Be sure all vehicles are locked at all times.
- Never leave valuables in plain view (cell phones, laptops, handbags).
- Educate your family members on the proper use of the alarm system.
- Activate your alarm system whenever the house is empty, even for a short while.
- Do not open your door to someone you do not know or are expecting.
- Install motion detector spotlights in the backyard and on the garage door.
