Road Infrastructure Improvement from 2006 to 2010

The Town of Hampstead is continuously working on renewing and replacing its infrastructure. Thanks to many interest-free loans and grants, we have been able to do more infrastructure work than any past Hampstead administration. The result to date has been vastly improved roads and very significant improvements to underground water distribution network.

In 2006, a section of Queen Mary was reconstructed and we resurfaced (without scraping) the underlying roadsurface on parts of Finchley, Dufferin, Merton and Thurlow. We also totally reconstructed selected blocks on Heath, Stratford, Dufferin and Finchley. In 2007, major road reconstruction was accomplished on Fleet Road, both the east-bound and the west-bound lanes between Finchley and Queen Mary.

The reconstruction of Fleet Road included the re-location of manholes, catch basins and storm drains. The catch basins were built into the sidewalks in order to avoid depressions on the road surface. In addition to relocating the manholes and catch basins, an additional French drain type of water dispersal system was put in place to effectively diminish the probability of flooding. Nevertheless, it is advisable that each residence still be equipped with a sewer back-flow valve to guard against sewer backflows during severe rain storms.

In 2007 (completed in 2008), we did roadwork on Wexford, Holly, Aldred, Applewood, Belsize and Netherwood. All this work and most of the work in prior years also included selected sidewalk repairs.

In 2008, we repaved Glenmore, and parts of Albion, Heath, Queen Mary, and Stratford. Watermain work has also been done on Glenmore.

In addition, we are using Hampstead’s own paver wherever possible so as to reduce our costs. It is cheaper than using an outside contractor and the work is almost as good, although it takes longer. Our paver has been used to pave low traffic streets such as Eton Crescent, Hampstead Road between Finchley and MacDonald, Cressy between Queen Mary and Heath, Haverstock, and Merton between Heath and Albion.

In 2008 and in 2009, work was concentrated on water mains and some sewer repairs.

In 2010, approximately $3,000,000 was spent for work of which $1,684,000 came from federal and provincial grants and the rest was financed with long term borrowing payable over 20 years. Water main and sewer work was carried out on Ferncroft, Belsize, Applewood, Aldred Place, Harrow, Fleet, Queen Mary, Downshire, Thurlow and others.

You will find here summary plans detailing all Paving and Watermain work performed between 2006 and 2010.
