Last year, the Town implemented a new green collection. This collection takes place every week on Fridays during summer months (from April to November) and replaces the Friday garbage collection. The new collection applies to all residents and all building types.
The vast majority of municipalities in Canada have once a week garbage collection. On the island, Westmount, CSL, Beaconsfield, TMR, and others have had once a week collection for a long time. Data provided by the Town’s garbage contractor show that over 70% of our garbage is collected on Tuesday, so all residents will have to do is hold onto the other 30% for an extra half a week.
Accepted green waste includes:
- Outdoor spring cleaning residues and other landscaping work waste
- Tillage residues
- Waste from gardens or fruit trees
- Small branches (not exceeding 1m in length and 5cm in diameter) grouped together with fibre string
- Cut grass and weeds.
Please note that regular garbage may no longer be put out on Fridays. Residents who put out non green waste as described above will be fined as per the Town’s bylaw.
All green waste must be placed in one of the following:
- In a reusable container (i.e. garbage bin)
- Cardboard boxes
- Paper bag for garden waste. See below for a list all neighbourhood stores carrying paper bags for green waste.

Your container(s) may be put out after 6 pm the night before collection day. Prior to that time, containers of green waste may be kept near your garage door, at or behind your building line. The Town asks that you instruct your gardener to dispose of green waste into a container(s) of their choosing, among the ones listed above and that they leave the green waste for us to collect on Friday rather than taking it away.
