HAMPSTEAD, A LEADER IN RECYCLING
Hampstead is pleased to announce that it has considerably increased its waste management rates for 2008, according to the Montreal Agglomeration’s Waste Management Assessment Report issued recently.
In 2008, out of 32 boroughs and demerged cities on the Island of Montreal, Hampstead’s recycling rate was the fourth best on the island at an impressive 64%. Only Senneville, Plateau Mont-Royal and Ville Marie have better results. Due to the Town’s new larger recycling bins introduced this year, recycling rates will have climbed even more in 2009.
“I want to thank our residents who heeded our call to be green and have increased their recycling,” said Mayor Steinberg. “The Town itself is very green and our website has a large “Hampstead Goes Green” section with many tips on being environmentally responsible, but we couldn’t have attained such impressive results without the enthusiastic commitment of our residents,” concluded Steinberg.
The Town is looking into possible composting options for organic waste, but, even now with just the leaf collections in the fall, Hampstead diverts 260 tons of compostable material from garbage and has the 7th best organic waste recovery rate on the island.
Overall, Hampstead has the fifth best record on the island with 37% of its garbage being recuperated. We are on the right path and the Town encourages residents to continue participating in this collective effort, which will benefit the community as well as future generations.
