Garbage Collection

General Information

Garbage collection in Hampstead takes place each Tuesday, beginning at 7 am.

For your convenience, and in accordance with by-law 705, your bin can only be taken out after 6 pm the Monday before collection. As it is difficult to pinpoint exactly when garbage collection will take place on your street, we strongly recommend that your garbage be taken out for collection no later than 7 am on collection day. Garbage taken out after that time risks not being collected until the following week.

Note that due to potential problems with vermin, you MUST NOT put out your Town-approved yellow garbage bags before 5:30 am on collection day. Learn more about yellow bags for excess garbage.

The garbage collection company will pick up all refuse placed in the black Town-approved bin, providing that the bin does not contain waste that is recyclable. The bin must weigh no more than 100 lbs. (45 kg). They will also pick up any garbage left in Town-approved yellow bags. Please note that all other types of garbage containers and unapproved bags WILL NOT be picked up.

Bulk household items:

The garbage collection company will also pick up bulk household items left at curbside on garbage day. This, however, excludes the following items:

- Household Hazardous Waste items (see list at: HHW Collection)
- All electronics
- Refrigerators

Using the Town-approved black garbage bin is a must!

In line with the Town's long-term waste management and reduction efforts, all single-family homes and buildings with less than 6 units have been provided with a black garbage bin by the Town. These new bins were distributed in May 2011.

Like the recycling collection, this new garbage pick-up will be an automated one, and therefore requires special care when you put your bin out for collection. Specifically:
Place your bin wheels facing your house at no more than 6 feet (2 meters) from the street, which means directly next to the sidewalk.

  • Ensure that no parked cars are blocking access to your bin from the street (ideally, placing the bin on your driveway avoids such uncontrollable situations)
  • Ensure that the top of your bin is completely closed, and that no garbage hangs outside your bin.

Please note that any type of garbage bag may be used INSIDE the bin, at your convenience. Yellow Town-approved garbage bags should only be used for excess garbage placed beside the bin, when the garbage bin is full.

All other types of garbage containers and unapproved bags will not be picked up. We suggest that you reuse your old garbage containers for the Friday green collection. If you wish to dispose of them instead, please call the Public Works department at 514 369-8200, ext. 8280. We will pick them up for you and properly recycle them. Please ensure that your old bin is properly rinsed before pickup for sanitary reasons.

Excess Garbage? Use yellow bags approved by the Town

If your garbage exceeds the capacity of your Town-approved garbage bin, you must use yellow Town-approved bags. These bags are extra-resistent and have the Hampstead logo printed on them. Additional bags are available for purchase at Town Hall or at the Irving L. Adessky Community Centre for $10/package of 10 bags, all taxes included.

When it comes to using these bags, please note the following:

  • It is NOT NECESSARY to use yellow garbage bags provided by the Town inside your bin. You may use any type of garbage bag INSIDE your bin.
  • Yellow Town-approved bags should be placed next to your full black garbage bin on collection day.

The yellow bags should be used for garbage only. DO NOT use them for recyclable materials, nor for the green collection, as the contractors for either of those collections WILL NOT pick up these bags.

Collection of oversized refuse

Please be advised that in accordance with Town By-law 705, the Town of Hampstead offers its residents a special pickup service for bulky items (such as fridges, furniture, mattresses, electronic equipment, household appliances, etc.) subject to a fee.

The pickup fee is determined on the spot by a Public Works representative on case-by-case basis, depending on the weight, size and nature of the item. Please note that given the complex nature of this kind of pickup and the cost incurred by the Town for performing it, the Town can charge a maximum fee of $160 per pickup.

The Town provides free estimates of the cost of your pickup. Once the estimate is made, you will have the option of using the Town’s service or not. We ask you not to leave your discarded items at the curbside because doing so would result in a violation notice from the Town. At all times, you may also call a local refuse collection company or drop your bulky items at your closest Eco-Centre located at 6925 Côte-des-Neiges, between Bedford & Jean-Talon. Proof of residence is required (driving permit, tax account, Access Montreal card, public utility invoice along with an ID card). Be advised that the Centre is closed on Mondays but open on Saturdays. For its opening hours, please call 514-872-0384 or 3-1-1.

Moreover, Hydro-Québec picks up old refrigerators for free and will pay you $60 by mail as part of its Recyc-Frigo Program. Old refrigerators are disposed of following legal and environmentally sound procedures. Please visit www.recyc-frigo.com for an appointment for home collection.

For further information regarding this topic or to request a free estimate, please call Public Works, at 514-369-8200, ext. 8280 (Monday to Friday 7:00 am to 2:30 pm ) or Town Hall, at 514-369-8200, ext. 0 (Monday to Friday, from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm).
