Water-Gate saves Hampstead hundreds of thousands of dollars annually
Inthe summer of 2009, the Town acquired a new Water-Gate system designedto stop the flow of water in the case of water main breaks and divertit back to the street. The new acquisition has saved the Town hundredsof thousands of dollars annually in potential insurance claims forflooded basements.
Hampstead was the first town on the island touse the Water-Gate flood water diversion system. Hampstead PublicSecurity, who is at the scene of a water main break within 5 to 10minutes of a call, keeps the Water-Gate system in their vans (see photobelow). The device is unrolled to form a barrier that stops water fromflowing down a driveway by diverting the water back to the street.
“Hampsteadis lucky to have very dedicated employees who work together as a team,”explained Mayor Bill Steinberg. “In this case, we had inherited a veryserious problem and our Division Chief of Purchasing, Michel Richard, discovered the Water-Gate system. Together with Public Security andPublic Works we have put together a rapid response plan.”
Regularmaintenance of Hampstead’s water main network was neglected during themunicipal merger. Consequently, following the demerger, Hampstead had awater main network consisting of old pipes filled with gunk and proneto breakage. The Town had about 55 water main breaks each year duringthe borough years. Now, most water pipes have been relined, rehabilitated or replaced. By the end of 2010, over 80% of the water mains needing work will have been rehabilitated. Most of the water mains not being done are on Cote St. Luc Road where there are no homes, only apartment buildings with garages at the end of the driveways. The Town has never had a claim from this section of town.
