2024 Remembrance Day Exhibition

The Town of Hampstead is truly grateful to everyone who joined us at the Irving L. Adessky Community Centre for our heartfelt Remembrance Day tribute to veterans, with a special focus on Sergeant Hurwitz through Project 44. This exhibition honours veterans and their incredible courage and sacrifice, designed to be immersive, educational, and engaging. It unfolds in three distinct but complementary sections: an immersive component featuring a video loop of a veteran, a museum display with photos and artifacts accompanied by explanatory texts, and an interactive section where visitors can create and pin poppies on a commemorative wall.

Through an innovative approach integrating mixed realities and varied sensory elements, the exhibition seeks to foster a profound emotional connection, educate, and raise awareness about veterans’ histories and challenges.

We extend our deepest thanks to everyone who contributed to making this exhibition possible—our museum partners, volunteers, and community members—whose efforts allowed us to honour these stories with the respect they deserve. And to each visitor who added a piece of themselves to our commemorative poppy wall, thank you for being part of this shared memory.

Lest we forget.

A tribute to Sergeant Hurwitz

This section offered visitors a unique opportunity to connect with the story of a war hero, Sergeant Samuel Moses Hurwitz. A continuous video on his life and achievements along with his personal artifacts and medals were presented to honour this extraordinary individual. This commemorative tribute highlighted the legacy of Canada’s most decorated Jewish soldier of the Second World War, a powerful reminder of his remarkable courage and sacrifice.

One of the most touching moments was witnessing the family of Sgt. Hurwitz experience the tribute firsthand, seeing his legacy honoured within our community. Their presence added a deep layer of meaning to the exhibition and to our shared acts of remembrance.

Immersive video - We remember them

In the immersive section, visitors were invited to experience veterans’ stories through a continuous video loop. This content aimed to create a profound emotional connection by presenting the experiences and sacrifices of military personnel in an authentic and direct way. This reflective moment allowed visitors to gain a deeper understanding of the reality and dedication of those who served.

Museum Section

The second part of the exhibition showcased a collection of historical and contemporary artifacts and photographs from the Canadian Grenadier Guards Museum, the R.M.R. Museum, and Canada Company’s “Je me souviens” program. Each item on display—from uniforms to medals, and personal letters—were accompanied by descriptive texts that offer unique context and powerful testimonials, revealing the bravery and stories of each veteran.

Poppy wall

Finally, the exhibition concluded with an interactive space where visitors could express their tribute by creating a poppy to pin on a commemorative wall. This symbolic gesture allowed everyone to actively participate in remembrance, leaving a personal mark of respect and gratitude toward those who served. This engaging experience provided a meaningful opportunity for collective reflection and connection.
