Important Notice – Snow Removal Operations
Over the past several days, a number of concerns have been expressed regarding snow removal operations during the holiday period. We recognize the challenges winter conditions can create, particularly when weather patterns are unstable, and wish to provide a clear overview of the current situation.
The Town of Hampstead is responsible for snow clearing and snow removal across its entire territory, which includes approximately 29 kilometres of roadways and 58 kilometres of sidewalks. Clearing, salting, and the application of abrasives are carried out as required to maintain safe conditions, while full snow removal operations are initiated when accumulations reach established thresholds.
During periods of freezing rain or ice storms, snow removal operations may be temporarily suspended. Operating heavy equipment under such conditions presents safety risks to both crews and residents and may affect the effectiveness of the work. Once conditions stabilize, operations resume and, in some cases, must restart in order to address all accumulated snow across the Town.
Snow removal is a complex municipal operation influenced by several factors, including weather forecasts, equipment availability, staffing levels, and coordination across the network. When multiple weather systems occur in close succession, timelines may be adjusted to allow crews to proceed in a safe and methodical manner throughout all sectors. During the holiday period, operations continue, but may progress at a different pace than what is typically observed outside regular periods.
As part of standard procedures, snow is temporarily placed along curbs and on lawns to ensure safe circulation. The Town subsequently returns during later phases to remove snow banks left at street corners. Residents and private contractors are also reminded that depositing snow onto streets or sidewalks is prohibited under municipal by-laws and significantly disrupts snow removal operations.
Residents are encouraged to contact the Town through its official communication channels for any questions or service requests. During the municipal office closure, assistance remains available at all times through Public Security Dispatch at 514-369-8250.
We thank residents for their patience and cooperation as winter operations continue. Ensuring the safety, accessibility, and well-being of the entire community remains our priority.
