Collections

General Information

Garbage collection happens each Tuesday as of 7:00 AM.

Bins can be taken out between 6:00 PM the night before collection (by-law 705) and 7:00 AM on collection day to ensure collection. You may use any garbage bag inside the bin.

Bins must weigh no more than 100 lbs. (45 kg).

Place your completely closed bin, wheels facing your house, at no more than 6 feet (2 meters) from the street, which means directly next to the sidewalk, ensuring no parked cars block access to your bin from the street.

Any excess garbage must be packed in yellow Town-approved garbage bags and placed by the bin. Only use these bags for excess garbage.

Yellow Town-approved bags (with Hampstead logo) are available for purchase on My.Hampstead for $10/package of 10 bags, taxes included.

Do not take out Town-approved yellow garbage bags before 5:30 AM on collection day to prevent potential vermin problems.

Only waste placed in black Town-approved bins without recyclable waste and Town-approved yellow bags will be picked up.

Recycling placed in the Town-provided blue bins is collected every Wednesday, starting promptly at 7:00 A.M.

All materials must be placed inside the bin with the exception of flattened cardboard boxes.

Wednesdays from 7:00 AM

Collect the following organic materials in small specially designed kitchen containers:

  • Kitchen scraps (vegetables, fruits, meat, fish, bones, eggshells, coffee grounds and filters) and other biodegradable waste such as paper bags, small sticks and leaves.

Empty the kitchen bin into the brown bin for curbside pick-up.

Per By-law 705, the Town of Hampstead offers a special pick-up service for bulky items (such as fridges, furniture, electronic equipment, household appliances, etc.) subject to a fee (based on complexity and amount of garbage to be collected).

You may request a free estimate of your pick-up cost and further information by filling this form.

Once the estimate is made, you may accept or decline the service.

Discarded items must not be left at the curbside. Doing so will result in a violation notice from the Town.

Bulky items may also be dropped at your closest Écocentre located at 6925 Côte-des-Neiges, between Bedford & Jean-Talon.

Proof of residence is required (driving permit, tax account, Access Montreal card, and public utility invoice with an ID card). Be advised that the Centre is closed on Mondays but open on Saturdays. For its opening hours, please call 514-872-0384 or 3-1-1.
