Urban Wildlife Management

Living safely alongside wildlife in an urban environment

The presence of wildlife such as raccoons, skunks, foxes and coyotes is part of modern urban life. The Town of Hampstead promotes a responsible and safe coexistence approach based on prevention, awareness and respect for wildlife.
Most situations can be avoided by adopting simple preventive measures that reduce attractants. The Town does not conduct systematic trapping or relocation of wild animals except in specific circumstances involving public safety.

Best Practices for Coexistence

To reduce wildlife activity near residences:

  • Do not feed wildlife, even indirectly.
  • Ensure garbage and compost bins are securely closed and placed out only at scheduled times.
  • Remove potential attractants, including pet food left outdoors.
  • Seal access points to attics, sheds, garages and crawl spaces.

Prevention remains the most effective solution.

When to Report a Situation to the Town

Residents are encouraged to contact the Town in the following situations:

  • An injured or distressed animal located on public property.
  • A situation presenting an immediate safety risk.

For emergencies, please contact Public Security.

The Government of Québec strictly regulates the capture and relocation of certain wildlife species. Temporary restrictions may apply depending on the time of year and geographic area.

Residents are advised to consult provincial wildlife guidelines before undertaking any private intervention.

For non-urgent situations, including wildlife presence on private property, residents are encouraged to contact the SPCA or a qualified wildlife control professional.

The Town supports safe, humane and regulation-compliant solutions.
