Water distribution network and maintenance

The Town of Hampstead is responsible for maintaining and managing the local potable water distribution network throughout its territory. This includes municipal water mains, valves, hydrants and associated infrastructure.

The supply and quality of drinking water are the responsibility of the Ville de Montréal, which provides water through the Atwater filtration plant and the major aqueduct network, including the main line located beneath Ellerdale.

This division of responsibilities ensures effective service management while maintaining compliance with provincial drinking water standards.

Voluntary Reduction in Drinking Water Consumption - June 1, 2026

The Town of Hampstead wishes to inform residents that Ville de Montréal, which is responsible for water services across the Montréal agglomeration, will begin preparatory work this week as part of emergency interventions involving strategic components of the metropolitan drinking water network.

According to information provided by Montréal, this work may temporarily impact the water network in several municipalities and boroughs across the agglomeration, including possible fluctuations in water pressure at certain times.

As part of these operations, Montréal is encouraging municipalities across the agglomeration and residents to participate in a voluntary collective effort to reduce drinking water consumption during the work.

Hampstead is among the municipalities that may be affected by this situation. The Town therefore wishes to relay this request and encourages residents to adopt simple responsible water-use measures over the coming days, including:

limiting outdoor watering;
avoiding non-essential water use;
postponing pool filling;
shortening showers;
running household appliances only when full.

Every effort helps support the stability of the metropolitan drinking water network during the interventions.

Discoloured Water

Discoloured water may occur following work on the distribution network.

In such cases, residents are advised to let cold water run for several minutes until it clears, in accordance with municipal notices.

For urgent or prolonged issues, residents are encouraged to contact Public Security.

Municipal Responsibilities

The Town of Hampstead is responsible for:

Property Owner Responsibilities

Temporary Water Shut-Off Request

If a property owner requires a temporary water shut-off for private work, a request must be submitted to the Town to schedule the intervention.

Water Meter Installation

Installation of a water meter may be required in certain circumstances, in accordance with applicable regulations.

Specific requirements and procedures are provided by the Public Works Department when applicable.
