Waste Collection

Garbage, recycling and organic waste

The Town of Hampstead provides waste collection services according to a structured weekly schedule designed to promote responsible waste management and effective sorting at the source. This essential municipal service helps maintain clean streets, reduce environmental impact and support local and provincial sustainability objectives.
Collection services include household garbage, recyclable materials and organic waste. Each category is collected on a designated schedule to ensure operational efficiency and maximize material recovery.
Compliance with placement guidelines, collection schedules and sorting directives directly contributes to service quality, operational safety and neighbourhood cleanliness. Resident cooperation remains a key factor in the success of the Town’s waste management program.

Garbage collection

Garbage collection happens each Tuesday as of 7:00 a.m.

Bins can be taken out between 6:00 p.m. the night before collection (by-law 705) and 7:00 a.m. on collection day to ensure collection. You may use any garbage bag inside the bin.

Bins must weigh no more than 100 lbs. (45 kg).

Place your completely closed bin, wheels facing your house, at the edge of your property.

Any excess garbage must be packed in yellow Town-approved garbage bags and placed by the bin. Only use these bags for excess garbage.

Yellow Town-approved bags (with Hampstead logo) are available for purchase for $12/package of 10 bags, taxes included. Do not take out Town-approved yellow garbage bags before 5:30 a.m. on collection day to prevent potential vermin problems.

Only waste placed in black Town-approved bins without recyclable waste and Town-approved yellow bags will be picked up.

Since 2025, recycling collection (blue bin) has been overseen at the provincial level by Éco Entreprises Québec (ÉEQ), which is now responsible for managing the selective collection system across all municipalities, including Hampstead.

In Hampstead, recycling is collected every Wednesday starting at 7:00 a.m. Recyclable materials must be placed inside the blue bin provided by the Town. Flattened cardboard boxes may be placed next to the bin when they cannot fit inside, provided they are neatly stacked and secured to prevent scattering.

The modernization of Québec’s recycling system aims to standardize practices across municipalities, improve environmental performance and ensure better recovery and valorization of recyclable materials. A single, harmonized list of accepted materials now applies province-wide, simplifying sorting at the source and reducing contamination.

The Bac Impact program, implemented by ÉEQ, supports this transition through education and awareness initiatives designed to encourage clear, consistent and effective sorting practices.

By adopting responsible recycling habits, residents play an active role in reducing waste and advancing a more circular and sustainable economy.
