Protection, prevention and By-law enforcement

The Public Security Department plays a central role in maintaining the quality of life in Hampstead.
Comprised of a director, two lieutenants, and several officers, the department maintain a proactive presence across the territory and responds to calls as promptly as possible. Officers are responsible for protecting residents, preventing incidents and enforcing municipal by-laws.
Beyond enforcement, Public Security also provides guidance, support and preventative services to residents.

Heading out of town? Enjoy peace of mind with Hampstead Public Security’s Vacation Home Check Service. While patrolling the town, our officers can also keep an eye on your home to enhance its security while you’re away.

Before leaving, notify Public Security of your absence, and patrols around your property will be increased for added protection.

Public Security officers are also responsible for enforcing various municipal regulations, including:

  • Public property use

Officers prioritize education and prevention, while retaining authority to issue fines when required.

Online and telephone scams are increasingly sophisticated and may target anyone, particularly seniors. Fraudsters often impersonate financial institutions, government agencies, police services or even family members in distress to obtain personal or banking information.

When in doubt, say no. Hang up. Take time to verify.

Legitimate organizations will never pressure you to share passwords, access codes or make urgent payments.

If you receive a suspicious call, inform the caller that you will call back, then dial the official number of the organization yourself (using its official website or the number on your bank card). Never return a call using a number provided by the caller.

Do not click on unknown links, never share verification codes sent by text message, and secure your accounts with strong passwords and two-factor authentication.

If you believe you have been targeted or victimized, report the incident to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre and contact your financial institution immediately. In case of emergency or immediate threat, call 911.
