The Town of Hampstead recognizes the importance of honouring individuals whose commitment, leadership or achievements contribute meaningfully to the vitality, cohesion and identity of the community.
Through its civic recognition programs, the Town celebrates residents, partners, volunteers and distinguished individuals whose actions enrich municipal life and reflect Hampstead’s values of excellence, service and community engagement.
These honours represent the community’s gratitude while helping preserve Hampstead’s collective memory, strengthen civic pride and promote community leadership.

The Town’s honours programs aim to recognize outstanding contributions to the community, promote civic engagement and celebrate individuals whose actions contribute to Hampstead’s development and reputation.

The Order of Hampstead

The Order of Hampstead

The Order of Hampstead is the highest honour conferred by the Town. Launched in 2026, the program recognizes individuals whose actions, commitment or leadership have left a lasting impact on the community.

Inspired by Canada’s longstanding civic traditions, the Order of Hampstead highlights exemplary contributions that enrich municipal life and support the Town’s social, cultural, environmental and civic development.

Purpose of the Order

The Order of Hampstead aims to:

  • recognize outstanding contributions to the community
  • promote civic engagement and leadership
  • celebrate excellence, volunteerism and public service
  • preserve the Town’s civic legacy and collective memory
  • inspire future generations

Eligibility

Eligible nominees may include:

  • Hampstead residents
  • municipal employees
  • individuals or organizations whose contributions have significantly benefited the community
  • partners or collaborators who have contributed to Hampstead’s development or reputation

Recognized contributions may include:

  • community and social engagement
  • arts, culture and heritage
  • education, mentorship and youth development
  • public safety, wellness and community support
  • environmental leadership and sustainability
  • volunteerism and humanitarian efforts
  • sports, recreation and healthy living
  • civic and institutional leadership

Levels of Distinction

The Order of Hampstead includes three honorary levels:

Steward of Hampstead (S.H.)
Recognizes meaningful community engagement and sustained service.

Guardian of Hampstead (G.H.)
Recognizes significant leadership and lasting positive impact on the community.

Laureate of Hampstead (L.H.)
The highest distinction of the Order, reserved for exceptional contributions that have profoundly shaped Hampstead and its civic legacy.

Nomination Process

Nominations may be submitted by:

  • a resident
  • a community organization or partner
  • a member of Council
  • the Director General

Each nomination must include:

  • the official nomination form
  • a detailed description of the nominee’s contributions
  • supporting documentation (letters, testimonials, awards, etc.)

Deadline: August 30

Selection Committee

A Selection Committee reviews nominations and makes recommendations to Council.

The Committee includes representatives from municipal administration, Council and the community, including a previous recipient.

Official Recognition Ceremony

Honours and distinctions are presented during official ceremonies recognizing civic engagement, community leadership and exceptional contributions to municipal life.

These ceremonies strengthen Hampstead’s collective memory, celebrate inspiring role models and recognize the individuals who actively contribute to the Town’s evolution and reputation.

The Key to the Town of Hampstead

The Key to the Town of Hampstead is a ceremonial and symbolic distinction awarded on an exceptional basis to recognize remarkable contributions, official visits or meaningful service that has profoundly impacted the community.

Rooted in a longstanding civic tradition dating back to fortified towns presenting their keys to individuals held in the highest esteem, the distinction today symbolizes trust, respect and gratitude toward its recipients.

Meaning of the Distinction

The Key to the Town symbolizes:

  • the community’s welcome and esteem
  • recognition of exceptional contributions to municipal life
  • the enduring relationship between the recipient and the Town
  • the values of service, integrity and civic leadership

This distinction may be presented to residents, dignitaries, partners or visitors whose achievements or service reflect the values and aspirations of the Hampstead community.

General Criteria

The Key to the Town may be presented to individuals who have:

  • demonstrated exceptional leadership or service to the community
  • significantly contributed to Hampstead’s reputation and development
  • performed acts of courage, compassion or exemplary commitment
  • maintained a meaningful relationship with the Town or its residents

This distinction is awarded selectively in order to preserve its prestige and symbolic significance.
